Muses’ Celebration—Welcome to 2016 Tainan Fine Arts Exhibition

2016 Tainan Fine Arts Exhibition officially opened at Tainan Culture Center on September 23th of this year. The exhibition comprises six categories, including Western Media, Oriental Media, Calligraphy, Photography, Traditional Crafts, and Sculpture. Out of the 417 entries, 173 pieces of artworks have been selected. The award ceremony was held at Tainan Evergreen Plaza Hotel on September 24th.

The first prize winners of the six categories are- Lin Hsiu-hui’s(林秀慧) “With or Without the Shadow” in the Western Media category, Lin Jhen-nao’s(林貞鐃) “Care” in the Traditional Crafts category, Huang Feng-chang’s(黃奉暲) “Revival” in the Sculpture category, Yang Hui-hua’s(楊慧華) “The Original Sound of Stumbling” in the Oriental Media category, Lee Jui-jung’s(李瑞榮) “Four Poems by Li Bai” in the Calligraphy category, and Huang Wen-yu’s(黃文郁) “Wanderers in the City” in the Photography category. Among them, Yang Hui-hua’s “The Original Sound of Stumbling,” Lee Jui-jung’s “Four Poems by Li Bai” and Lin Jhen-nao’s “Care” were further selected by the judges, winning the honor to receive the “Tainan Award,” and will be collected by the Tainan City Government.

The exhibition offers opportunities not only for local artists to learn from each other, but also for citizens to know the development of local art in Tainan. As Tainan is known for its prolific cultural assets, the artworks present creative ideas observed from traditional culture in daily life. Lin Jhen-nao’s “Care”, for instance, is a lifelike sculpture of Matsu, regarded as the goddess of the sea. In Taiwan, early immigrants who crossed Taiwan Strait would pray to Matsu for safety and blessing. Matsu is an important religious figure in Tainan.
